Are Festivals Killing Themselves?

So far there have been two clear casualties on the festival circuit which to me are giving off signs of things to come and its not looking good. The Wax:On festival in Leeds was pulled with a couple of weeks to go with the organisers having money problems when a backer pulled out. Secondly Glastonbury having to sell their tickets in HMV. Now don’t get me wrong, Glastonbury is still going to be rocking and you wont be able to tell that its not sold out so in a way its no casualty at all but the fact tickets did not sell out is a sign that people just aint going to festivals like they have done in the past.

With the price of everything going sky high over the last 12 / 18 moths people cant justify spending so much money in a field. The average person at glastonbury spends just under £300 each, this is a very large figure compared to what it used to be ion the past. and its sky high prices that are charged at festivals for drinks and food that are pushing people’s festival spends up so high. At some point something is going to break and festivals will be one of the first things people give up because of how much it cost.

I feel that for festivals to keep going and selling all the tickets prices need to be dropped.

Lets hope Global Gathering are trying to pioneer this this year with an announcement that they will be strictly monitoring prices in the event and they will also be publishing a price list on the website for the stuff they are selling at the festival. They recognise festivals already this year have been charging a ridiculous price (i think they were digging at the Summer Sound System!)
