Economic Festival Downturn
2008 had some amazing festivals, 2008 was also the year the festival scene started to break. Festivals have been around for a long time bu there seems seems to b more festivals now than there ever has been in the past. Everybody has jumped into the bubble and the bubble started to burst. poor tickets sales, Poor weather, Poor lineups, people will go on all day about why a festival may not sell out but nobody touches on what i feel is the reality, Price!
Setting up a festival is a very expensive business but the cost of going to a festival has lso never been so expensive. In 2008 Global Gathering set me back £700 for myself and my girlfriend, This is a lot of money for anybody and with the ticket prices set to rise in 2009 then 2009 could be the year festivals really start to struggle. In 2008 a couple of festivals fell through but since then the country has gone into economic doom and gloom which is not going to change in time to make all festivals this year a success. I feel that only the biggest will survive, Glastonbury, Global, Creamfields, V and the Leeds and reading festivals will be fine but some of the smaller players may come to an end if they aim to high.
People are being more wise with their money, For example, i have spend £500 for two weeks in Ibiza with my girlfriend this year instead of 2 days in Stratford for £200 more.
Still 2009 should be a good year for festivals as with the poor weather most festivals experienced in 2008 then things can only get better!!
